Soft Keyboard Design Idea
This is a soft keyboard design idea
My fingers are fairly large and the use of onscreen keyboards has been a little challenging at times.
Most onscreen soft keyboards have multiple equal height rows of letters, symbols, and numbers. I noticed in my typing on these soft keyboards, that my error is increased on the lower rows, while on the upper rows the error is decreased. After thinking about it a while, it dawned on me that because my thumbs are wide, the lower rows will need taller heights, while the upper rows will need wider widths.
If you notice in the first picture, my thumbs over the lower rows of the keyboard are too large for the height. While in the second picture, with my thumbs in the upper rows, you can see that my thumbs are wider. This is all due to the radial angle of my thumbs, and probably most human thumbs in general.
In the upper rows, the error is from side to side buttons being unintentionally tapped, while in the lower rows upper and lower buttons are being tapped accidentally.
I'm not setup or making Android keyboards at this time, but if someone would like to try it and prove my theory. This is the theory:
Wider buttons in the upper rows, and taller buttons in the lower rows to accommodate thumb contact surface pivoting.
SwiftKey or anyone want to give this a try in their beta keyboards?
